Neiva J. Fortes

I am a Ph.D. candidate in Economics at Syracuse University and expect to graduate in May 2027. My research interests are in the economics of education, health economics, labor economics, and the economics of crime.

My research examines how early-life environments, public policies, and institutional structures shape education, health, behavior, and well-being, particularly among children and other vulnerable populations. My job market paper studies how state-mandated elementary school recess laws affect discriminatory bullying and harassment.

I am committed to engaging teaching that connects economic theory to students’ experiences and real-world policy questions.

I am on the 2026–27 academic job market.
